SUMMARY:Beyond Bereavement: Understanding Grief\, Loss\, and Resilience in Later Life
DESCRIPTION:Older adults may experience the loss of health\, independence\, identity\, relationships\, community\, and cherished roles\, while also navigating cumulative grief shaped by caregiving\, structural inequities\, and life transitions. This interactive training explores the neuroscience of grief\, diverse experiences of loss in older adulthood\, and practical\, healing-centered approaches that help professionals respond with compassion\, cultural humility\, and evidence-informed care. \n \nLearning Objectives: \nExplain how grief affects the brain\, body\, and behavior in older adulthood\, including the impacts of cumulative loss and chronic stress. \nRecognize multiple forms of grief experienced by older adults\, including bereavement\, anticipatory grief\, ambiguous loss\, caregiver grief\, disenfranchised grief\, and losses related to health\, identity\, and independence. \nApply healing-centered\, culturally responsive strategies that foster connection\, dignity\, and resilience when supporting grieving older adults\, families\, caregivers\, and communities. \nDr. Sarina Saturn is a neuroscientist\, educator\, and healing-centered facilitator whose work explores the intersections of grief\, trauma\, compassion\, and resilience. Drawing on research in neuroscience\, psychology\, public health\, and community-based practice\, she creates engaging trainings that integrate science with culturally responsive\, relationship-centered approaches to care. Dr. Saturn has taught and trained healthcare professionals\, counselors\, educators\, judges\, and community leaders\, focusing on supporting well-being in the face of chronic stress\, loss\, and adversity. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:It’s In Our Lane: The Role of Behavioral Health Providers in Preventing Firearm Injuries Among Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Firearm access presents unique considerations for older adults\, particularly in the context of cognitive decline\, dementia\, and elevated suicide risk. Yet many clinicians feel uncertain about how to approach conversations about firearm safety\, and most older adults have not developed a plan for the future management of their firearms. \nThis webinar will provide an overview of firearm-related risks among older adults and explore practical\, trauma-informed approaches to promoting safety while preserving dignity and autonomy. \nParticipants will learn… \n1. The benefits of secure firearm storage practices\, \n2. How to conduct firearm safety screening and provide lethal means counseling in clinical settings\, and \n3. When an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) may be an appropriate intervention. \nThrough real-world examples and practical guidance\, attendees will gain strategies to engage older adults and their families in compassionate conversations about advance planning and firearm safety. \nPresented by: \nJenn Reed\, PhD\, MPH is a postdoctoral scholar at the Gun Violence Prevention Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Reed previously worked in law enforcement as a civilian manager. For her dissertation she performed a trauma-informed analysis of law enforcement agency mental health wellness policies. Her other research interests include supporting care partners of people living with dementia\, with an emphasis on firearm safety\, and the psychological well-being of people who work in violence prevention and response. \nRebecca Valek\, MSPH is a research project coordinator with the Oregon Health & Science University’s Gun Violence Prevention Research Center. Rebecca’s research focuses on evaluating Oregon’s Extreme Risk Protection Order law through mixed-methods research\, increasing timely access to firearm injury data\, and building collaboration across sectors and communities to address the firearm injury epidemic. Rebecca graduated from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with her Master of Science in Public Health in Health Policy and Management in May 2024. \n \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Catatonia in Older Adults: Syndrome of Movement and Behavior
DESCRIPTION:GOBHI Older Adult Behavioral Health Initiative Training Series 2026 Part I. Build your knowledge and skills to meet the behavioral health needs of older adults. \nCatatonia in Older Adults: Syndrome of Movement and Behavior\nSpeaker: Ruthy Lindvall \nCatatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome involving changes in movement\, behavior\, speech\, and responsiveness. Although often associated with severe mental illness\, it is frequently under‑recognized in older adults\, where it can overlap with medical conditions or be mistaken for delirium or dementia. Early identification is essential\, as catatonia is highly treatable when recognized promptly. \nIn this session\, we’ll review how catatonia presents in older adults\, key signs to look for\, and how to differentiate it from other conditions. We’ll cover risk factors\, assessment tools\, practical bedside evaluation strategies\, and current treatment approaches. Case examples will help illustrate real‑world application and support clinical decision making. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to recognize\, assess\, and respond to catatonia in late life. \nMHACHBO CEUs\nNASW CEUs pending* \n \nRegister Here
